SMCLA January 31 Mobile Social Panel

As you may know, I serve as a board member and blog editor for SMCLA (Social Media Club LA). I’ve written a number of posts at SMCLA’s blog, and I’ve got two more up for your reading pleasure. Both are spotlights on two of our speakers at our upcoming event on Tuesday, January 31 (I have one more speaker spotlight that’ll be published next week.)

If you’re in the LA area, I encourage you to join us for our Understanding the Mobile User and the Future of Mobile Tools event. It’ll be held at the ING Direct Cafe in Westwood, right on the corner of Santa Monica and Cotner. You can’t miss it.

Speakers scheduled include:

  • David Teichner, CEO of Yowza!! - You may know it as the company that actor Greg Grunberg (of “Lost” and “Heroes” fame) co-founded a few years ago.
  • Tim Street, VP of mDialog – These guys offer advertising via streaming on mobile devices. Tim also is a co-host of This Week in Media.
  • Patrick Mahoney, VP of Biz Dev and Strategy of Mogreet – The company makes mobile apps and offers advertising via mobile. If you watch Pretty Little Liars, you can register your phone number to receive clues from “A.” That’s a Mogreet campaign. (Neat!)

I’m Headed to BlogHer!

Here’s the requisite BlogHer post. I’ll be updating my personal blog as much as I can this weekend. I anticipate a lot of chaos and downtime.

This is my first time at BlogHer. I’m attending as a blogger, not as a social media pro or PR person, though I’m sure that topic will come up. I’ll be reporting for several outlets that I blog for. Since BlogHer hits nearly every aspect and interest in my life, I can see myself blogging about a lot of sessions. Let’s hope I get to attend the sold out ones as well.

More later or check out my Twitterfeed this weekend.

SMCLA – Understanding the Power of Geo-Location Tools – July 26th

This is a cross-post from my post I wrote on the SMCLA blog.

Or… as my clients might ask “What the hell is geo-location?”

My clients often ask this question, “What’s so great about Foursquare [or other geo-location service]?” It usually is followed up with “Why do I need to be on <insert geo-location service>?” and “What do I do with it?”

It depends on what your target market/audience is doing with their smartphones. They’re using FoursquareYellowpages,Yelp, and Gowalla to check-in (telling their friends where they are) and looking for tips and advice about where they’re at. Recently, I was on the Big Island of Hawaii and checked in on both Foursquare and Yelp. I looked for Check-in Specials on Foursquare and tips on what to eat on Yelp.

Not only do these geo-locations services have the power of sharing user reviews and tips, some of these services have a program of daily or weekly deals from local, regional and national businesses!

In fact, Yellowpages.com is introducing a new service called “Deal of the Day.” Sign up now and get a $5 credit toward your first deal purchase!

If you’re a business, entrepreneur, consumer, blogger, normal person, or all of the above, our next SMCLA panel is going to be quite helpful. Bring your questions with you. If you’re hesitant about partnering with a geo-location service, we’ll be here to help answer those technical questions. If you’re interested in DIY geo-location specials but your executive team is leery about going solo, bring them with you!
