Job/Intern Applications – Dos and Don’ts

As intern applications come in, they’re put in Yes, No, Maybe piles. When I check the No pile, I see why they’re Nos.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to review and filter applications for open positions at several organizations and groups. You’ve seen Monster.com or your school’s jobsearch tips, guidelines, and suggestions on how to get your resume to the Yes pile, right? Well, let me just fill up more space in the universe and repeat it over and over. Apparently some people think these rules don’t apply to them. Think again, padawan, because that’s why you’re still in the No pile.

Dos:

  1. Read the directions. If we request a resume and a cover letter, please send a resume and a cover letter. We receive great resumes, but they don’t come with cover letters that show how you write and your enthusiasm. It also tells us you don’t know how to follow directions.
  2. Spell-check. There have been times when I stop reading a cover letter to find out about you, but I start to circle grammatical and syntactical errors. My fault for losing my attention span, your fault for causing it

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t mail-merge your cover letter and omit every field. We recently received a cover letter from a college senior majoring in communications. First, she mail-merged her cover letters. (Ok, I’m going to let this slide, but let’s just say my colleagues didn’t let this slide.) Second, every mail merge field was EMPTY. It read, “Dear [company].” Really.
  2. Don’t overstuff your resume. We can read between the lines. This is why your cover letter is so important! If you don’t have a lot of work experience, then I’d like to read why you want this internship or job. Are you trying to pick up class credit, experience, travel writing, social media experience? What is it? Tell us in your cover letter! Tell us your academic achievements and what you’re looking to do as a career!
  3. My personal pet peeve: Don’t oversell your school. I rolled my eyes when I read “I come from the prestigious [insert university]‘s School of Communication.” You know what? I don’t care. You could have graduated from a junior college and I still wouldn’t care. I care about you than your school, and my peers share the same view.

So go forth, young Padawan, and make sure you pay attention to your potential employer’s application.

You are not a Jedi, yet.

request.
