Guest Speaking at UCLA Extension

Last month, the Erik Deutsch (by way of Serena Ehrlich) invited me to be a guest speaker at his UCLA Extension course this semester – “Social Media Best Practices for Communications Professionals.”

Well tomorrow’s the night, and I am so excited! The last time I spoke about social media was at my alma mater the Drucker School, and that was fun! I’ll be guest-starring with Dan Portnoy, a social media dynamo in the field. It should make for an interesting class.

Let’s be frank, I’m also nervous as hell – public speaking is my kryptonite. (Bear with me, students, bear with me.)

Drucker School – Social Media Deck

Sorry for the delay! If you’re a LinkedIn connection of mine, you’ll see this deck was posted a while ago. For those of you visiting from The Drucker School, please feel free to use this deck. (Just remember to give credit where credit is due – the usual manners.)

Speaking: Social Media at the Drucker School

The Drucker School of Management, Claremont Graduate University

I’ll be heading to my alma mater, the Drucker School of Business, today to speak on social media to the Student Marketing Association. The president asked if I could speak about my experiences in social media and the latest trends. While this is supposed to be an easy topic for me to delve into, it wasn’t. I ended up with a deck that I hope the students could take back to their employers (or for themselves) to use as ammo and back-up. Maybe next time, I can present a practical guide to starting a social media program!

I’ll be posting my deck on Slideshare as well as here. So check back later! I’ll post a recap of what happens tonight!

Intro to Social Media preso – March 2009

This morning’s workshop went well. It was a smaller classroom, which fostered more dialogue regarding privacy and how-to’s. Thanks, attendees, for making this fun! I hope you learned a lot and can take the info back to your contacts.

I’ve posted my deck and handout on Slideshare.net. (www.slideshare.net/chrisylam) And here is the deck as an embed.

This Sat’s Workshop (Social Media 101)

Hey there! I’m back from Canada and back at work. The funeral was fine. My cousins and extended family were very nice in hosting us and accommodating us.

This week I’m catching up and finishing up my “new” deck for Saturday’s workshop. That’s right, I’ll be teaching my “Intro to Social Media” workshop at Women at Work in Pasadena this Saturday at 10:30am. I think we’re full. This time, we’ll be in the computer lab and it’s a smaller room.

It’s amazing how things have changed in one year in social media.

  • Foursquare vs. GoWalla vs. Yelp – Brightkite kind of died
  • Twitter vs. Plurk vs. Pownce – Twitter has pretty much killed both, IMO
  • Friendfeed – I dunno – but looks like Buzz might have a hold (I still don’t like FF)
  • Facebook vs. MySpace
  • Tumblr vs. Posterous

I’m interested to see where the pieces fall in 12 months. You?
